Safety precautions when making candles

Candle making is an enjoyable and creative activity that can become dangerous if  safety rules are not followed. Working with melted wax carries the risk of fire and burns. Below are key recommendations to ensure a safe process.
Before starting, it is essential to prepare the workspace and check the equipment
properly.

  • Choosing the Workspace: the workspace should be clean, on a flat surface, and free from flammable materials. It is recommended to use a fireproof mat. Ensure there are no curtains or other easily flammable items in the room. The area should be well-ventilated and inaccessible to children and pets.
  • Checking Equipment: make sure the stove is clean and free of grease that can ignite. Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby when working with wax.
  • Preparing Tools: all tools, including wax melters, molds, and thermometers, should be in good condition. Use heat-resistant containers.
  • Materials: use high-quality materials and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Be aware of the melting and ignition temperatures of the wax you are using.
  • Protective Clothing: wear an apron, long-sleeved clothing, and closed-toe shoes. Use gloves and safety glasses to avoid burns.

Wax Handling Requires Constant Attention:

  • Do not leave the wax unattended. Always monitor the wax melter and do not leave it on when you are not in the room.
  • Temperature Control: constantly check the temperature of the wax with a
  • thermometer. Do not allow the wax to exceed 90°C (194°F). Overheating can cause it to ignite.
  • Melting Time: melt the wax using a double boiler and avoid using a
  • microwave, as it can heat the wax unevenly.
  • Avoid Contact with Water: water entering melted wax can cause splattering and ignition. In case of a fire, use a fire extinguisher, sand, or a thick cloth, but never water.
  • Dyes: add them at the beginning of the melting process to ensure they dissolve completely.
  • Fragrances: add after reaching the desired temperature. Ensure you use the correct proportions and stir thoroughly for even distribution.
  • Pouring: follow the essential guidelines for pouring melted wax into the container. Choose containers made of materials that can withstand high temperatures.

Keeping Children and Pets Safe

Do not allow children or pets near the workspace. After completing the process,
carefully transfer the finished candles to a cooling surface.
Making candles can be safe and enjoyable if you follow the rules. Work in a well-
ventilated area, keep fire safety equipment handy, and use protective gear. Strictly
adhere to safety guidelines, and the candle-making process will bring you joy.
