Agate is a semi-precious stone. Wavy stripes of different colors form incredible patterns, in which you can sometimes see entire pictures: landscapes, castles, lakes and mountains. Due to the originality of the pattern, as well as its widespread use, agate was one of the first among gemstones to be used for making jewelry and decorative items. The most common hypothesis for the origin of the name "agate" is the Achates River in Sicily, where the oldest of the developed deposits is located. Agate was formed in mountain lavas due to the intergrowth of various minerals, the predominant mineral in which is chalcedony. It most often has a layered structure. Alternating layers are of different colors and can have different degrees of transparency. Due to this, an original, unique pattern is revealed when the stone is cut cross-sectionally.
